How We Work: Building Systems That Solve Real Problems

Denis Rotich
Systems Engineer
Denis Rotich works at the intersection of technology and problem-solving at AB Entheos. As a Systems Engineer, he develops digital solutions that support the organisation’s work, improve processes, and help teams work more effectively.
He is currently working on the WILD system, which is used to process nature claims. A key focus of his work is expanding the system to Gabon and adapting it to support operations in the new country.
Connecting Systems to Our Work
Technology plays an important role in helping teams work efficiently, access information, and make informed decisions. For Denis, his work involves ensuring that the systems AB Entheos builds support these needs.
By simplifying processes, improving access to information, and making it easier to track progress and coordinate activities, he helps develop systems that support the organisation’s programmes.
Understanding the Problem Before Building the Solution
Much of the work involved in developing a system happens before it reaches its users. It starts with asking questions, understanding people’s needs and mapping out the processes a system is expected to support.
For Denis, this also involves testing different approaches and making adjustments along the way. Understanding the actual problem is essential, and it sometimes takes more thought than writing the code itself.
This becomes particularly important when working with different teams, each with its own needs. Translating those requirements into a simple, effective system requires careful thought and collaboration.

“Sometimes, the most important work is not writing the code but understanding the actual problem we are trying to solve.”

Balancing Technical Requirements with Everyday Realities

One challenge Denis is navigating is balancing the need to build reliable, scalable systems with the realities of how people work and the resources available.
Different teams have different requirements, and designing systems that accommodate these needs while remaining simple and effective takes careful consideration. It means looking beyond technical requirements to understand how a system will fit into everyday work.
This balance is central to building solutions that are not only technically sound but also useful to the people who rely on them.
The Value of Solving the Right Problem
One lesson Denis has learnt through his work is that technology is only as useful as the problem it solves.
A technically impressive system may have limited impact if it does not address people’s needs or fit into their everyday work. Its value depends not only on what it can do, but also on whether it responds to the challenges people are trying to address.
This insight shapes Denis’s approach to systems engineering, placing an understanding of people’s needs alongside technical capability.

Looking Ahead
Denis is excited to build stronger systems that help AB Entheos work more efficiently and increase the impact of its programmes.
